Spring of the time of year where outfit creation gets fun. No longer do I have to account for the cold weather or arbitrary seasonal fashion rules. The sun is out. The weather is nice, and I can pull out all of my favorite dresses, skirts, and sandals. Spring is the time of year that the dress leans closer to the romantic style aesthetic.

What is the romantic fashion aesthetic?

Nordstrom’s Trunk Club says, “The romantic fashion trend is all about softness, femininity, lush textures, and a hint of vintage-inspired pieces. So think about your more elaborate tops, such as the ones with bell sleeves, peplum cuts, ruffles, trim, and lace. Cropped style cardigans go well with this style type. Dresses and skirts are big in this type. Dresses of various types, but a major one I’ve seen lately are those square necked babydoll type dresses. This style type usually calls for a simple sandal or heel. Most, if not all, of these items are in a pastel or neutral color family. Think frills and lace people. It’s going to get really girly.

Why does Romantic style aesthetic go with Spring?

If you look at the latest fashion releases for spring you will see a lot of the silhouettes and colors that you find in the romantic style aesthetic. When you think of spring fashion you think of flowers, pastel colors, and light neutrals. Spring is fresh and whimsical. These are the same things that I think of when I think of  the romantic style aesthetic. Apparently, I'm not the only one because stores are thinking about this too and that’s why you'll find so many romantic style pieces out for spring. It's the look of the season, and with a few simple pieces you can play with this style aesthetic all season long.

You'll need:

A Whimsical Dress:

This is a dress the is very flowy and light. The silhouette reads sweet and feminine so something like the dresses below will work for this style type.

 A linen dress

Linen is such a light and sophisticated fabric. You're going to want to stick with a linen dress that is simple and preferably in neutral or pastel color.

Flowy Blouses:

Cute and flowy blouses are a must for this romantic spring look. Try to find one in a light fabric and color.

 Pants

Keep these light in color. Its up you whether you want to go jeans or trousers. I prefer jeans, but a wide leg trouser or palazzo type pant would work as well.

 Shoes

This is the time to break out the sandals. Sandals and simple heels are perfect for this look.

Quick Tips While you hunt for your pieces

  • Colors: pastel and neutrals (browns and whites)

  • Fabrics: linen, silk, lace, flowy and other delicate to the touch fabrics

  • Simplicity: think simple heels, sandals and accessories. The goal is to go for a soft and simplistic look.

  • Silhouette: The best way I can explain it is feminine and flirty. You don’t want extremely tight clothes, but you don’t want them to be too oversized. You want to have a nice in between. It’s almost as if it’s gracing your curves.

The Outfits:

Here are some of my favorite ways of styling these spring go-to items.

Outfit 1:

I wanted to lean into the girly feel of the romantic style and started with a flowy babydoll dress. The florals on this dress are in a purplish/pink color. It has a bell sleeve and is made of a delicate fabric to give it a free flowing feel. I went with a nude strappy heel with a bow detail on the ankle to keep with the girly feel. I think this outfit is a great way to get the romantic style on a plus size body. It’s loose around the belly but still gives you a nice silhouette at the bust. It’s just short enough to be flirty and fun. This is a great look moving into spring.

Outfit 2:

For the second outfit, I wanted to play with pants. A lot of the romantic outfits that are offered are all dresses. I wanted to give an alternative look for those that aren’t fans of dresses or skirts. Lately, I’ve been into straight legged and oversized jean, but those don’t work for this style type. So, for this outfit, I feel using a skinny jean will work well. I went with a basic white skinny jean and paired it with this billowy cream top. This top holds all the romantic style elements from the color to the ruffles. It’s simple in design, but stands out with its dramatic sleeves and the way it drapes the body. This top gives me such a soft and feminine silhouette. I love it! I finished with a cognac leather espadrille sandal. This outfit is so soft and romantic it looks like I stole it from a meet cute scene in a rom-com. I just need a dog, a bag of groceries with a bouquet of tulips, and a serendipitous meeting with the one.

Outfit 3:

For this outfit, I went with this sleeveless linen dress. This dress has tortoise shell buttons and a tie to cinch in the waist. I paired the dress with these brown suede strap up the leg sandals to keep the outfit neutral in tone. This was my favorite outfit out of the three. It  makes me feel very girly and sophisticated.
